Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Westley Kuns, and this is the Kuns Chiropractic Clinic podcast, coming to you from right here in Gresham, Oregon. Today we’re talking about something that affects so many people I see in my office every single week. Mobility. Specifically, how chiropractic care can help you move better, feel better, and honestly just live better.
Now, here’s the thing. A lot of people don’t think about their mobility until something stops working the way it should. Maybe you bent down to pick something up and felt that familiar tightness. Maybe getting out of bed in the morning takes a little more effort than it used to. Or maybe you’ve noticed that you just don’t move the way you did a few years ago. Sound familiar? You’re not alone. Not even close.
So let me break this down for you. Mobility is basically your ability to move your joints through their full, natural range of motion. And when that range gets limited, everything downstream gets affected. Your posture changes. Your muscles start compensating. And before long, you’ve got pain showing up in places that seem completely unrelated to the original problem. That’s the tricky part.
Here’s what’s interesting about the spine specifically. Your spine isn’t just one big bone. It’s made up of twenty-four movable vertebrae, and each one of those joints needs to be moving properly for the whole system to work well. When one or more of those joints gets stuck, or what we call restricted, the surrounding muscles tighten up to protect that area. Your brain senses the restriction and sends a signal to guard it. So now you’ve got stiffness, tension, and reduced movement, all from one joint not doing its job.
That’s where chiropractic adjustments come in. What I do is apply a very specific, controlled force to those restricted joints to help restore their normal movement. When we free up that joint, the muscles around it can start to relax. The nervous system gets better input. And your body can start moving the way it was designed to move. It’s not magic. It’s mechanics. Good, evidence-based mechanics.
Now, mobility isn’t just about the spine. We work on hips, shoulders, ankles, wrists, all of it. Because your body moves as a connected system. Tight hips can affect your lower back. A restricted shoulder can create neck tension. When we look at the whole picture, we can find the real source of what’s slowing you down.
So what can you start doing today? A few simple things, honestly. First, just move more. I know that sounds obvious, but gentle, consistent movement is one of the best things you can do for stiff joints. Short walks, gentle stretching, anything that gets your body out of one position and into another. Second, pay attention to how long you sit in one place. If you’re at a desk or on a couch for hours at a time, set a reminder to get up and move for just two or three minutes every hour. Your joints need that circulation. And third, drink your water. Hydration matters more than people realize when it comes to keeping your joints and discs healthy.
Now, if you’re dealing with stiffness that’s been hanging around for a while, or you’ve noticed your range of motion has really decreased, that’s a great time to come in and get evaluated. You don’t have to be in severe pain to benefit from chiropractic care. In fact, catching things early is always better than waiting until it becomes a bigger problem.
At Kuns Chiropractic Clinic, we take time to actually look at how you’re moving, not just where it hurts. We want to understand the full picture so we can put together a plan that makes sense for you specifically.
